LIFESTYLE-RELATED CAUSES OF INSOMNIA: LIVING ENVIRONMENT - ECONOMIC REALITY
Economic reality forces many people to compromise on the allotment of space in their homes. The number of children may increase, for example, while the number of bedrooms remains constant. Parents who bring a baby's crib into their room may find that the child's slightest sniffle or whimper is enough to keep two adults awake for hours. Children who share bedrooms may find that one sibling's nocturnal arousals—bed-wetting or sleepwalking, for example—interrupt the sleep of all. Snuggling together in bed is one chief attraction of cohabitation, but the partner of a snorer who has no other sleeping space may find that pleasure somewhat diminished. Even the purchase of lesser-quality mattresses and pillows may contribute to nighttime discomfort.
Family tensions militate against adequate sleep. Couples who argue may be unable to disguise their battles from the children upstairs or down the hall and may thus fail to shield them from the emotional fallout. Unresolved arguments or ongoing conflicts over anything from schoolwork to social life to household responsibilities also take their toll at night. In many cases family counseling can serve to ease these tensions; often, too, simple constructive discussions can do much to air differences and provide solutions. If you or someone in your family is having trouble sleeping, a long, thoughtful look at your family's group dynamics might reveal that the cause of the problem at night lies in your interactions during the day.
